| graduate class of 2011, aero BEngs. :) |
that's how long i've been in school.
and today, it has officially ended. 18 years of school. and from now onwards and probably till the rest of my life, the word "school" and all other words associated with it will no longer appear much in my conversations, and probably here. it's bittersweet thinking that how school has been everything in my life thus far and now, it'll no longer be.
but i have to say, i've kept many dear memories from these 18 years in my heart.
in the 2 years of kindergarten (PAP bukit batok west), i met my first best friend pearlyn, whom i lost contact once we left the place. i remembered being jealous of her for being able to ride the bicycle haha.
the next 6 years in keming primary school was just all about childish stuff. "dun friend you"-s and police & thief and singing pop boybandish songs in class. i had my first close guy friend in primary two, he's called patrick and we used to talk on the phone every night at 8pm. it was a routine, and come to think of it, i think i might secretly had a crush on him. you know, those primary school puppy love kind of thing. haha. but he was a great friend, always told me which homework i needed to do, which textbook i needed to bring, and that was essential because i used to get punished a lot for forgetting things. and ever since we had those phone calls i even became the class monitor the next year. and then we lost contact once we went into different classes in primary four. i think shortly after he changed school and my gut tells me that it has to be a boy's school. haha. anyway, i've been trying to find patrick and thank him proper for those times. but unfortunately facebook has 10129318092 patricks and i've looked at many of those profiles, PM-ed some, and didn't manage to find him yet. maybe next time i'll try harder.
primary 5 and 6 i hung around with close friends that i still keep in contact with, candy and shihwee. in primary 5 i had this teacher called ms vim, and she's the first one who made me realise one year later that she's really someone whom we call a great teacher! when she was around, she used to be really strict and fierce and we didn't like her, but after that i realised how much she actually gave to us and taught us. until now i still think she's an awesome teacher.
in primary 6 we used to be the most enthu kids in class and so our teachers loved us, especially our form teacher ms inpa. i think that was the first time i knew teachers could be so prejudiced and biased, but thankfully i was on the side that received the good stuff and so i didn't had a loss haha.
my secondary school was supposed to be nanhua secondary, like most of classmates in primary school. i chose RV as first choice though, but unfortunately having a score of 251 i missed it by 3 points. nevertheless, my ma appealed the case for me and somehow i ended up talking to the principal, mr tham, in this meeting room where he explained his rational of accepting us who were below the cut off. that was one thing that made me realise the importance of loyalty, as he explained to us in the room how he only chose those who placed RV as their top choice for the two rounds.
in rv, i joined concert band, the cca of my choice. unfortunately i didn't make it to the section of my choice, flute, as i got kicked out in the 2nd round of auditions and ended up in percussion instead. but turned out that percussion was a far more interesting and cool-er section and until now i'm glad that i went there. (: awesome friends like cy ahmean chong heng and we used to form a clique called the four seasons. haha. i was autumn! we had 4 years of ups and downs over there, since our sheer numbers meant loads of problems when it came to competitions and stuff where they could only choose a select few. but i have to say all those little fights we had were really nothing in compared to the more awesome memories we shared while practising weeks and weeks and performing on many stages.
sec one and two were the years i had my "laopos", aka JAW, aka jace amy and wenbin. they were the first to introduce me to this thing called "shuaiges" and taught me how to boy-look. HAHA. i can proudly say thanks to them i started finding an interest in this thing called eye candies in my later years. and happened that one of the eye candies whom they used to say wenbin likes and even had a codename associated with some poultry turned out not quite what i expected. i remembered the first time they pointed out him to me in some assembly i went "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" very loudly. and guess what? one year later i was in the same class as him, another year i ended up liking him quite seriously, and for the next 5 years or so those feelings didn't change. it's funny how things go in one big circle. as for the guy, i still see him around occasionally since we belong to the same group of friends. i think he still doesn't know about this but i guess there's no longer any need to hide it anymore since it's very much a thing of the past. but anyway, whenever i watch him play basketball (the most recent being sunig last year) i still get that fangirlish feeling. haha. as for my laopos? i still meet them once in a while. they've become really pretty and i still super love my babes!
the first two years in rv i also had this clique called "6 peers". apparently we were quite famous, i hope it isn't because of the lame name. haha. we had internal conflicts, many of them, a lot of backstabbing and stuff, but at the same time we spent some good time together in the same class. it's just pretty unfortunate that now i can only keep up with jo kawi's life and not everyone else's. oh yes, one of them, xiaojun, is now in mas and i heard that she's met loi and justin already (: NICE.
sec three and four were possibly my best school years of my life. i used the word possibly, because i can't decide which is better, jc or this, or maybe even the uni years. but anyway, i had a total blast there. 3/4g was not quite the usual class, we were rebellious but guai, noisy and ra-ra but very hardworking, and we had all kinds of people in one class. we were the only class without any student councillors, and we loved it that way and hence we didnt vote anyone in in sec four. haha. our first class chairperson was a big time slacker too. pam tells me often how every time she enters the class she gets a big shock cos we'll be doing all the illegal stuff behind closed doors haha.
we had awesome teachers too, like mr choo, mr suria, and even ms vijay, who always entertained us in many ways. classes seemed like a whole load of fun, and i remember looking forward to mr suria's physics classes cos he used to tell us so many funny things about his life without meaning to be funny! the fondest memory was how mr suria told us about how he talks to his plants and insists that its a very spiritual thing, and how he readily admitted shaving his own hair when we asked why he had this patch on the right side of his head. o.O he never fails to surprise us. and from him, i learnt never to judge a book by its cover.
i could go on and on about 4g, because we simply did so many things together like getting 2nd for a national day performance, selling roti pratas, bbqs etc etc, but because this is meant as a summary i shall just go straight to the ten of us. the ten of us, consisting of 5 girls and 5 boys, wasn't a clique but it just happened that as we planned class outings after we graduated these are the people who appear the most. i think what's really nice is that until now we still meet up really often, like me with the girls especially, and it just seems weird when we don't see each other for more than a month. i like it that we actually whatsapp a whole load, spend some quality time together on many occasions (like new years, cny, christmas!) and recently get involved in more "unhealthy" activities, or so we call it. and we still talk freely about rvians who know about, our lives, our shared memories, and they are really the group of friends that made me fully believe in the term "forever friends". can never be more thankful.
hwachong was a short two years, but nonetheless an awesome, eventful one. with many rvians choosing to go nj, it was rather peculiar for me to choose hc but i really wanted to know people out of rv. and as it turned out, 05S78 is the awesomest class EVER. while i ended up meeting my ex classmates quite a bit, they're usually the same few and that same cliques, but for 78, it's always a CLASS outing. as zeying would say, 78 is made up of all kind of weird people, and i think this is precisely why its so much fun! we have people like timo and zong who will ease any kinds of tension possible, blur poks like chieh who makes bullying so fun, zai people with all kinds of ideas, normal but not so normal rvians, and a whole load of weirdy pies. it's never stressful being with them, and more often than not i tend to forget all the bad stuff going on in my mind unknowingly, and every outing just makes me happier.
i think what's amazing about this is that in those two years, i didn't think that we were a class who was very close, and in fact i didn't have faith that we'll meet up often after we leave hc. but it turned out the total opposite - i think we just got closer and closer! i really believe the thing that made everything work out is how all of us takes turns to organise outings, and how we all take the initiative ourselves, and how we make the effort to make things work. and now? we're still an awesome class even as half the class is at all over the globe (plus we even got a president scholar among us!). 78 rocks and we all agree to it. :D
another important part of jc was canoeing, and in fact, that was a huge part of my life! canoeing was where i pushed myself to my limits, attained things i never thought i could've achieved, realised that part of me which i didn't know. it was probably the first time i gave my heart and soul into something i really wanted and was willing to give it my all. i've learnt so much from haoxia, from the sport, and from my teammates that no doubt made me who i am today. and while it transformed me from that skinny girl in rv to that she-hulk at the end of the two years, i wouldn't exchange that two years of memories for anything. and plus, i loved sprinting. and i'm glad i managed to continue the sport for another 2 years after leaving hc.
and finally, i've reached the final part of this - NTU. because the memories are still fresh, i think i can probably write a 10 000 word essay just on this part. but nah, like i said, i want to do a summary. shall just touch on the 3 main parts - aero, hall and polo.
aero had people i grew to love after 4 years, and was a course i didn't quite enjoy as much as i expected. i remembered i had a hard time coping with the largely male population in the first sem, and even cried sometimes because of it o.O but unknowingly i managed to adapt to this environment full of testosterone and ended up making a few of my best guy friends in my life, like the hall 14 boys, kk, jx etc. special mention would be the 14 boys, especially since i spent so much time with them in the final year be it doing projects, fyp, making cheesecakes, eating ikea meatballs, mugging, watching movies, and simply hanging around in hall 14. oh yes, and the night rides on den's bike after every activity in 14. a few years back i would never be able to imagine myself, a girl, hanging out with so many guys and be totally fine with it, but hey, somehow now i can. it's been so much fun and now i'm really going to miss this so much. ): i can only hope that we all will meet often enough from now on.
then there's the aero girls, especially yuenling and deb whom i've been hanging out since the very beginning, and peiying who somehow knows me super well despite us not being able to spend much time together. (: our group has always been known for the biggest female gang in aero, having about one third the total girls. and yeaps! i'll always fondly remember the times we had sitting together in lectures drawing on each others' notes and having many lunches in between lessons :D
and lastly there's kk & kitling who i used to mug together every exam period in different places at school, from library, to benches next to lects, nexus, etc. etc. mugging is fun because of them and i have to say i probably wouldn't obtain such good results without them!
i could write a whole long essay on hall like i did on facebook last time, because hall was such a big part of me - the friends, the people, the things we do together. i don't think anyone can truly comprehend how amazing hall life is without being part of it themselves. the whole idea of complete freedom, the late nights at someone else's rooms htht-ing and drinking beer, the many fun stuff organised by the different committees, shouting across the block to get someone else's attention, lunches and dinners at the heart of all social activity - canteen 9, FOCs, OCIPs and everything else. i enjoyed every bit of the 4 years there, and made super a lot of friends from the 7 batches of niners, some of whom became my undoubtedly best friends (like our very lame come6, a parody of go5 haha).
which brings me to.... come6. this is just a collective name for all of us meant as a joke initially, but somehow it's convenient. haha but to be frank our gang of people contains the core 5 from the first ocip team (where we all got close at!) and other 46 seniors like lim wex fw cheryl. this group of people i can proudly say might be the people i can really truly let myself go and be myself! i think cos we've all gotten close in hall, and in hall you can't possibly show just the glam sides of yourself any longer, which is why we probably know every dirty linen, weird habits and what nots of the each of us. and since we know about everything, we're all able to accept each other as the way we are. like what leen said, there's no judging, and to me, even if we might have differing opinions it's always about having fun. oh yes, and because we are made of quite different people, it's really nice to htht with them cos they always give me all kinds of comments HAHA. and so come6 will be this group of friends i'll always hold dear to, and if possible, meet up as often as i could.
and now i'm at my final part - canoepolo. 2.5 official years as a competitive player, and another 1.5 years of being a recreational player. while at the end of the 2.5 years i realised how i wasn't cut out to play in competitions having all those nervous bouts and without the passion for winning, i wanna say that i had awesome teammates. :) we weren't the closest team and the best one, and sometimes we even had conflicts among ourselves which caused us to fail to unleash our full potential, but i'm really glad that in the end we're still a team :D
i thoroughly enjoyed the late nights out watching soccer with the boys at liquid kitchen drinking beer, prawning at farmart, staying over at shiahzy's and g's, and doing all the stupid things together like sitting at the 24h macs chatting till the first bus reaches. i really enjoyed the company of the few of us, g deb chih jp shiahzy sometimes jingxin yeehan and elvin, because there's always loads of funny squabbles and bitchiness peppered into our time spent. haha. it was really one of a kind i wouldn't get such moments anywhere else :P
as for the cca itself, i'm glad that even though i officially stated to them how i've decided to quit, they always welcomed me back to train with them and even formed teams with me for the competitions ahead! it's really a warm and fuzzy feeling and now i really enjoy going to trainings especially since the stress of performing is now gone (and i think i play better than i used to now!) anyway, nat champs is just this weekend and i'm so looking forward to it!
and so, i've finished summarising my 18 years of school into one entry. i consider this apt since i believe i might be reading through this a lot in the future while reminiscing my school days, and perhaps one day i can proudly show my kids this and tell them, "see, ma has made full use of my school years, and i really hope you get the best out of it too." and they can start going about making their own school life awesome. :)
and so with this, i can only say, life is what you make out of it. you make the best out of everything you have, and happiness is something only you can find. i'm glad i realised this early, and while i have little regrets here and there, i'm proud to say i've made full use of my life. and now, what goes on from here will be a very different story, and who knows, i might become a totally different huiwen in a year's time. but i do hope that my future self will remain the spirited person i am today no matter what life throws me, and i'll always be happy and contented.
and finally, just a random thought, i think i could have given a much more inspiring speech as compared to the two speakers yesterday. HAHA.
+ guaishou's! :D
