reminder to self.

missing rilyn :(

found this on this website and i think it's a great reminder on how all of us should lead our lives.

loved it!

-+-

As Maria Robinson once said, “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”  Nothing could be closer to the truth.  But before you can begin this process of transformation you have to stop doing the things that have been holding you back.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
  1. Stop spending time with the wrong people. – Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.  If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you.  You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot.  Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth.  And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends.
  2. Stop running from your problems. – Face them head on.  No, it won’t be easy.  There is no person in the world capable of flawlessly handling every punch thrown at them.  We aren’t supposed to be able to instantly solve problems.  That’s not how we’re made.  In fact, we’re made to get upset, sad, hurt, stumble and fall.  Because that’s the whole purpose of living – to face problems, learn, adapt, and solve them over the course of time.  This is what ultimately molds us into the person we become.
  3. Stop lying to yourself. – You can lie to anyone else in the world, but you can’t lie to yourself.  Our lives improve only when we take chances, and the first and most difficult chance we can take is to be honest with ourselves.  Read The Road Less Traveled.
  4. Stop putting your own needs on the back burner. – The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too.  Yes, help others; but help yourself too.  If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.
  5. Stop trying to be someone you’re not. – One of the greatest challenges in life is being yourself in a world that’s trying to make you likeeveryone else.  Someone will always be prettier, someone will always be smarter, someone will always be younger, but they will never be you.  Don’t change so people will like you.  Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.
  6. Stop trying to hold onto the past. – You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.
  7. Stop being scared to make a mistake. – Doing something and getting it wrong is at least ten times more productive than doing nothing.  Every success has a trail of failures behind it, and every failure is leading towards success.  You end up regretting the things you did NOT do far more than the things you did.
  8. Stop berating yourself for old mistakes. – We may love the wrong person and cry about the wrong things, but no matter how things go wrong, one thing is for sure, mistakes help us find the person and things that are right for us.  We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past.  But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.  Every single thing that has ever happened in your life is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come.
  9. Stop trying to buy happiness. – Many of the things we desire are expensive.  But the truth is, the things that really satisfy us are totally free – love, laughter and working on our passions.
  10. Stop exclusively looking to others for happiness. – If you’re not happy with who you are on the inside, you won’t be happy in a long-term relationship with anyone else either.  You have to create stability in your own life first before you can share it with someone else.  Read Stumbling on Happiness.
  11. Stop being idle. – Don’t think too much or you’ll create a problem that wasn’t even there in the first place.  Evaluate situations and take decisive action.  You cannot change what you refuse to confront.  Making progress involves risk.  Period!  You can’t make it to second base with your foot on first.
  12. Stop thinking you’re not ready. – Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises.  Because most great opportunities in life force us to grow beyond our comfort zones, which means we won’t feel totally comfortable at first.
  13. Stop getting involved in relationships for the wrong reasons. – Relationships must be chosen wisely.  It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.  There’s no need to rush.  If something is meant to be, it will happen – in the right time, with the right person, and for the best reason. Fall in love when you’re ready, not when you’re lonely.
  14. Stop rejecting new relationships just because old ones didn’t work. – In life you’ll realize that there is a purpose for everyone you meet.  Some will test you, some will use you and some will teach you.  But most importantly, some will bring out the best in you.
  15. Stop trying to compete against everyone else. – Don’t worry about what others doing better than you.  Concentrate on beating your own records every day.  Success is a battle between YOU and YOURSELF only.
  16. Stop being jealous of others. – Jealousy is the art of counting someone else’s blessings instead of your own.  Ask yourself this:  “What’s something I have that everyone wants?”
  17. Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself. – Life’s curveballs are thrown for a reason – to shift your path in a direction that is meant for you.  You may not see or understand everything the moment it happens, and it may be tough.  But reflect back on those negative curveballs thrown at you in the past.  You’ll often see that eventually they led you to a better place, person, state of mind, or situation.  So smile!  Let everyone know that today you are a lot stronger than you were yesterday, and you will be.
  18. Stop holding grudges. – Don’t live your life with hate in your heart.  You will end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate.  Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did to me is okay.”  It is saying, “I’m not going to let what you did to me ruin my happiness forever.”  Forgiveness is the answer… let go, find peace, liberate yourself!  And remember, forgiveness is not just for other people, it’s for you too.  If you must, forgive yourself, move on and try to do better next time.
  19. Stop letting others bring you down to their level. – Refuse to lower your standards to accommodate those who refuse to raise theirs.
  20. Stop wasting time explaining yourself to others. – Your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe it anyway.  Just do what you know in your heart is right.
  21. Stop doing the same things over and over without taking a break. – The time to take a deep breath is when you don’t have time for it.  If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.  Sometimes you need to distance yourself to see things clearly.
  22. Stop overlooking the beauty of small moments. – Enjoy the little things, because one day you may look back and discover they were the big things.  The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.
  23. Stop trying to make things perfect. – The real world doesn’t reward perfectionists, it rewards people who get things done.  Read Getting Things Done.
  24. Stop following the path of least resistance. – Life is not easy, especially when you plan on achieving something worthwhile.  Don’t take the easy way out.  Do something extraordinary.
  25. Stop acting like everything is fine if it isn’t. – It’s okay to fall apart for a little while.  You don’t always have to pretend to be strong, and there is no need to constantly prove that everything is going well.  You shouldn’t be concerned with what other people are thinking either – cry if you need to – it’s healthy to shed your tears.  The sooner you do, the sooner you will be able to smile again.
  26. Stop blaming others for your troubles. – The extent to which you can achieve your dreams depends on the extent to which you take responsibility for your life.  When you blame others for what you’re going through, you deny responsibility – you give others power over that part of your life.
  27. Stop trying to be everything to everyone. – Doing so is impossible, and trying will only burn you out.  But making one person smile CAN change the world.  Maybe not the whole world, but their world.  So narrow your focus.
  28. Stop worrying so much. – Worry will not strip tomorrow of its burdens, it will strip today of its joy.  One way to check if something is worth mulling over is to ask yourself this question: “Will this matter in one year’s time?  Three years?  Five years?”  If not, then it’s not worth worrying about.
  29. Stop focusing on what you don’t want to happen. – Focus on what you do want to happen.  Positive thinking is at the forefront of every great success story.  If you awake every morning with the thought that something wonderful will happen in your life today, and you pay close attention, you’ll often find that you’re right.
  30. Stop being ungrateful. – No matter how good or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life.  Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.  Instead of thinking about what you’re missing, try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.

back on track.

the day i took this photo was the day i wanted to get my life back on track.

during the pretty long walk, i took a couple of shots which now looking back, really are a good indication of what i was feeling then. i wanted to get things right, i wanted to free myself from the not-so-nice thoughts. and i wanted some colour in my life.

this is the photo that i'm the proudest of. :)

one week later, life still goes on. maybe if i do go through this underpass again i'll smile to myself thinking of those feelings associated with the place. and then all that's left is joy.

passion.

it's funny how i took so long, 22 years, to realise that maybe i've always been more an arts person than a science one.

i really enjoy using my right brain more. i like communicating with people, i love taking photos (something that's still growing within me), i enjoy making music with my piano, guitar, or even drums, and now that i've done my first video, i think i might love making videos too. yesterday's trip to the singapore art museum further reinforced this notion - i like making sense of the pictures and videos i see, the music and noise i hear, and more often than not i sense more connection to pieces of art (which of course, includes music), rather than numbers and analytic engineering junk.

i think it's the way singapore brought me up to be.

we've always been psycho-ed from young of how important science and math is - especially with what they call a "knowledge-based" economy and emphasizing how singapore is a research hub, and how if you were strong in both you'll most likely succeed in life. and i grew up believing that, and the exact opposite - of how being good in the arts almost meant that you'll be useless and poor when you grow up. it might have resulted from the fact that i came from rv, since rv is predominantly famous for being a science hub, and it's pretty obvious how the school emphasizes that more than anything else through all those research programs and the many optional courses that students get to attend.

and hence i grew up believing that i loved science.

maybe i did enjoying studying the sciences, but only because i like it more than math, languages, humanities, literature and all other things. but then again, maybe i liked the sciences simply because i haven't exposed myself to economics, film, photography, or many other things.

which brings me to the point - what do i really like?

for the past two years, i found myself really enjoying playing the piano. i play it at least three times a week, each time i can play for an average of two hours, sometimes even more. occasionally i do play those classical pieces i was taught during the proper classes, but more than anything i enjoy playing pop - accompanying singers, improvising on the spot, and sometimes even composing right at the moment when my fingers hit the keys. i like performing and i feel confident doing so, and i like the fact that the things a human brain can come up with just using the piano itself is simply limitless.

i like playing simple pieces that touches the heart - contemporary music that soothes, much like those you listen in a posh restaurant. i like playing the keyboard with a band, especially when someone starts strumming some chords or starts grooving on the drums and everyone else starts to play naturally in a flow.

this passion for music stays with me, and still burns strongly, but its upsetting how i can't find similar like minded among the people i hang out with simply because they were all brought up the same way as i was - being taught how being practical was the most important thing. its funny how difficult it is to truly pursue your passion here.

and now i love taking photos and editing them. i love carrying my jeremiah around, taking shots of the awesome things i see, and making memories permanent in digital form. i love travelling, because it gives me a chance to take many photos, see awesome things, and process the beautiful things in my right brain. i love adventure, because i enjoy the adrenaline rush and i like being in situations that challenges my preconceptions towards life.

now, i can proudly say i love all these, and perhaps a few more, but it sucks when i can't say that i love what i studied in the 18 schooling years, or even exclaim how i love my job (which of course, can only be definitive after i work long enough), or the many things that take the bulk of my time. eventually what i really want is to do what i love, so as to fully utilise that passion within me and at the same time, be truly happy.

but then again, human beings are such complicated creatures. who knows, maybe if i was trained in the arts instead i would have exclaimed the reverse, and who knows, if i explored the many other options around i might end up in the same place.

eeks, i'm being incoherent. and now i think i don't even make sense.

must have been the film j and i watched yesterday at SAM. about how the director first sees what he wants to see in his film, instead of having a ready script prepared. he talks about how he starts with a huge empty white space in his mind, and then how little parts of the picture will slowly appear on this white space till it forms a complete scene, and that's how he "sees" the film even before it is made. and then he went on describing his train of thoughts, which were both deep and highly provoking, things that a normal human being using wouldn't envision or process. and that really got me thinking many things, even though now i can't really remember what the film's about.

anyway, i really loved the exhibition at SAM on video. (: as for now there's 4 films that i really liked - the one that i just described, another one about helicopters and the vietnam war, one more on how mass media depicts violence, and finally, how thai farmers react to contemporary pieces of arts from the west. i think i'm going to try searching for all of them. hehhh.

okay, it's a little late. time to sleeeeeeep.

on a bike.

i suddenly think it'll be so awesome to travel around a country on a motorbike.

you know, like sitting on the back seat with my arms around the waist of someone i trust, and then whizzing past many different things along the way - like a boy on a bicycle, an old lady selling fruits by the roadside, or even vast turquoise lakes with swans on it.

it's going to be so awesome. i can picture it in my mind already. :)

dear huiwen, in case you didn't know, you're one month and a day away from starting work. and so to make full use of these 32 days, let's come up with a list of things to do before it officially begins.
  1. learn to cook rice in a pot (learnt but not yet mastered, 22/8)
  2. learn to steam awesome fish
  3. learn more nice teochew dishes from my parents and cook some awesome soup
  4. compile a 10 minute video of the new zealand trip and upload it on youtube!

  6. imagine that i'm a tourist in singapore and attempt to visit all the cheap or free touristy places (still ongoing)
  7. attempt to meet justin & loi for lunch/dinner (completed separately on 16/8 and 18/8)
  8. meet the 4g girls (completed 6/8 & 27/8) & 78-ers (completed 21/8, 27/8) twice

  16. print all my favourite photos

p.s. i'm starting no. 5 tomorrow at memories at old ford factory! :D i just realised it's about 3km away from home!  the perfect place to start. and i'll go walk along the railway too if they still allow us to!

haha on a side note, i've finally updated 2 long overdue entries on my nias trip in dec 2009. which means, i'm officially done with that! :D time to move on to last year's jun 2010 nias trip (aka another 14 days of entries) andden the BIOS trip with 78 (another 18 days gosh), before i can finally move on to kiwi land (which is 33 more days!!!) gosh. that adds to about 65 days' worth. but i'm really glad i wrote my travel journals religiously! they're such a joy to read after so long! :D

and yes, so here's :

YAY.

and oh yes, i've finally ended the cold war with ma since that incident after convo :) it surely feels good! and first day of nat champs ended. did pretty well with the vampires (aka me g deb mel joyce shimin & eunice from tp)! heehee.

rahhh

rather unknowingly I let shit enter my life again. I really hate those guessing, emoing, and periods of uncertainty that seem to remove joy from my life. I really need to get a grip of myself, to revert back to the me two years ago who can confidently say I don't give a damn. but the as age catches up on me I'm forced to think, maybe cos of social pressures, maybe cos I know its not possible to keep going on with my way of life. everyone grows up, unwilling we may be, but in the end its inevitable.

since the year started, many things happened, and all of those came and went. all kinds of people, all kinds of situation. I think since I prayed about it the beginning of this year, He's been teaching me many lessons as if to catch up with the lost time, allowing me to understand myself better through others, and of cos, preparing me for the right one in the end. some hurt more than others, and while there is some joy derived, I can only say, ouch.

the period of uncertainty will continue on nonetheless, but now what's more important is how I deal with it. as cliche as it may be, happiness is a choice. when life throws you lemons, make lemonade. that simple.

on a lighter note, just came back from a service at a traditional anglican church near my backpackers hostel in christchurch. I can finally see some connection between the anglican and catholic beliefs. its a great service nonetheless, although I'm the only person aged below 60 it still feels fuzzy and welcoming. took the holy communion as well, and chatted with the pastor for a while, then walked around the streets till the backpackers office opened (so that they could open the door for me).

and home in another three day's time. too fast. wanna stay here longer, partially cos I don't really want to face the things back home. roars.

smile.

smile more, huiwen. for it is proven that when you smile you instantly feel better too. :)

can't wait to be back at home alr. ma bought big yummy crabs for sis last night and I'm duperly jealous. and I'm still sad that I only get to see j on 3rd Aug onwards... boo.

breakfast time!

A Time for Everything

Ecclesiastes 3 | A Time for Everything

1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

20%

that's the probability of something happening, imo. don't ask me why, the number just struck me.

had a few intelligent conversations today! :D PAP & their policies with sis and bro-in-law, and then about christianity, horoscopes and prophet muhammad with justin. i love such debates and exchange of ideas because i really learn so much from them and it humbles me from the knowledge of how little i actually know about many things.

visiting sis was an awesome decision :D got many many things for nz and also had a great time catching up! :) loves my sis v much! actually, i really love my family. though i don't really express it to them directly (actually my whole family doesn't) i really appreciate their mere existence in my life. :) my parents have always cared for me selflessly, while my sis and bro has always been giving generously when it comes to me. we have had bad times, but in the end i know how much they love me and i hope they too know how much i love them! :D

anyway it's good that i'm thinking less now, after so many days have passed. the constant self reminders of the importance of being in control of my own emotions have taken effect and the many distractions and numerous events have proven to be very useful in taking things away from the mind as well :) i really think what doesn't kill makes you stronger.

and it's funny how i believe in getting what you want through the declaration of faith but yet when it comes to this i can't bring myself to declare it. too little confidence? maybe. but the little evidences of the past just made me feel this way, and i can't help it. the only and best thing i can do now is to simply leave it to Him. if it's to be, He'll make a way. and if it's not, then i know there's probably a better plan for me sometime later.

being very random here. but it's good to straighten thoughts once in a while. and there's so much i wanna learn!

p.s. i think i should start reading up on different religions of the world.

明白

once in a while when mayday plays on my ipod on shuffle it feels like i've struck gold. :O

sigh i wished mayday's here for a concert again ):

how to lead your life.

just watched randy pausch's last lecture in carnegie mellon university and I AM SO FREAKING INSPIRED. he's such as awesome man! and its such a coincidence that pam actually wrote an entry on him on her blog, quoting the best parts of the 1h 16mins lecture (actually not quite, i got the commencement speech from her post in fb which then led to the longer 'last lecture'). and so, i'll reblog it, in tumblr's terms :) pammie dear hope you don't mind!

The advice from a man who squeezed every minute of joy from his life - Randy Pausch (: The below are my favourite excerpts.

When you’re screwing up and nobody’s saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up. Is that when you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are your ones telling you they still love you and care.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want.

the brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people. Remember brick walls let us show our dedication. They are there to separate us from the people who don’t really want to achieve their childhood dreams. Don’t bail. The best of the gold’s at the bottom of barrels of crap.

Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you. He said, when you’re pissed off at somebody and you’re angry at them, you just haven’t given them enough time.
- jon snoddy

you obviously don’t know where the bar should be, and you’re only going to do them a disservice by putting it anywhere

If you’re going to do anything that pioneering you will get those arrows in the back, and you just have to put up with it.

When you’ve had something for ten years that you hold so precious, it’s the toughest thing in the world to hand it over. And the only advice I can give you is, find somebody better than you to hand it to.

The head fake – again, we’re back to the head fakes. The best way to teach somebody something is to have them think they’re learning something else.

His conclusions:
1. role of mentors, parents, friends, colleague
"Randy, it’s such a shame that people perceive you as so arrogant. Because it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish in life." - andy van dam
What a hell of a way to word “you’re being a jerk.” Right? He doesn’t say you’re a jerk. He says people are perceiving you this way and he says the downside is it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish.

Syl gave the best piece of advice pound-for-pound that I have ever heard. And I think all young ladies should hear this. Syl said, it took me a long time but I’ve finally figured it out. When it comes to men that are romantically interested in you, it’s really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do. It’s that simple. It’s that easy.

I’ll take an earnest person over a hip person every day, because hip is short term. Earnest is long term. Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself

when you do the right thing, good stuff has a way of happening.

Get a feedback loop and listen to it. Your feedback loop can be this dorky spreadsheet thing I did, or it can just be one great man who tells you what you need to hear. The hard part is the listening to it. Anybody can get chewed out. It’s the rare person who says, oh my god, you were right. As opposed to, no wait, the real reason is… We’ve all heard that. When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.

show gratitude
don't complain
be good at something, it makes you valuable
work hard
find the best in everybody
be prepared. luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

Here's the first head fake. This lecture, it's not about how to achieve your dreams, it's about how to live.

distraction.

i love reading the blogs of medical students.

actually, i read only two - glori's and steffi's, my classmate and junior from 78. but yet very often as i read through their entries it makes me feel like being one of them too, a doctor in making, experiencing different life-changing situations and going through life and death in a very unique way.

it gets harder especially whenever i read about their various postings, it's like - why the hell am i doing this freaking engineering course, why didn't nus give me that chance to be there (it was my first choice!), and why did i not choose to do something a little more meaningful?

sigh, i can only say, i'm not good enough. and i'm meant to contribute to the society in a different way, and that God has a better plan for me. yadda yadda yadda.

but now i can only pray that all my med friends will become great, respectable and well-loved doctors, and gimme free MC when i ask for it next time :)
