just watched randy pausch's last lecture in carnegie mellon university and I AM SO FREAKING INSPIRED. he's such as awesome man! and its such a coincidence that pam actually wrote an entry on him on her blog, quoting the best parts of the 1h 16mins lecture (actually not quite, i got the commencement speech from her post in fb which then led to the longer 'last lecture'). and so, i'll reblog it, in tumblr's terms :) pammie dear hope you don't mind!

The advice from a man who squeezed every minute of joy from his life - Randy Pausch (: The below are my favourite excerpts.
When you’re screwing up and nobody’s saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up. Is that when you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are your ones telling you they still love you and care.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want.
the brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people. Remember brick walls let us show our dedication. They are there to separate us from the people who don’t really want to achieve their childhood dreams. Don’t bail. The best of the gold’s at the bottom of barrels of crap.
Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you. He said, when you’re pissed off at somebody and you’re angry at them, you just haven’t given them enough time.

you obviously don’t know where the bar should be, and you’re only going to do them a disservice by putting it anywhere
If you’re going to do anything that pioneering you will get those arrows in the back, and you just have to put up with it.
When you’ve had something for ten years that you hold so precious, it’s the toughest thing in the world to hand it over. And the only advice I can give you is, find somebody better than you to hand it to.
The head fake – again, we’re back to the head fakes. The best way to teach somebody something is to have them think they’re learning something else.
His conclusions:
1. role of mentors, parents, friends, colleague
"Randy, it’s such a shame that people perceive you as so arrogant. Because it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish in life." - andy van dam
What a hell of a way to word “you’re being a jerk.” Right? He doesn’t say you’re a jerk. He says people are perceiving you this way and he says the downside is it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish.
Syl gave the best piece of advice pound-for-pound that I have ever heard. And I think all young ladies should hear this. Syl said, it took me a long time but I’ve finally figured it out. When it comes to men that are romantically interested in you, it’s really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do. It’s that simple. It’s that easy.
I’ll take an earnest person over a hip person every day, because hip is short term. Earnest is long term. Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself
when you do the right thing, good stuff has a way of happening.
Get a feedback loop and listen to it. Your feedback loop can be this dorky spreadsheet thing I did, or it can just be one great man who tells you what you need to hear. The hard part is the listening to it. Anybody can get chewed out. It’s the rare person who says, oh my god, you were right. As opposed to, no wait, the real reason is… We’ve all heard that. When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.
show gratitude
don't complain
be good at something, it makes you valuable
work hard
find the best in everybody
be prepared. luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.
Here's the first head fake. This lecture, it's not about how to achieve your dreams, it's about how to live.
+ guaishou's! :D
